New tower at Planina nad Vrhniko

11.05.2008
Yesterday, Saturday 10.5.2008, a new observation tower was ceremonially opened at Planina nad Vrhniko.

History of the tower: The first improvised 3m high observation tower was built by a group of Vrhnikar enthusiasts at Planina nad Vrhniko before 1934, followed by the construction of a 16m high observation tower, which was ceremonially opened on September 23, 1934 on the initiative of the then Vrhnika Beautification Society and destroyed during World War II; today's 21m tower was opened by the Vrhnika Tourist Society on May 22, 1955.

For many hikers and 18,000 annual visitors to Planina who climb the tower, it is rewarded with a real treat of views of the Julijce, Karavanke, Grintovce, Zasavsko hribovje, to the coastal snow-capped Snežnik and except for Krim, Planina offers one of the best views of the Ljubljana Marshes at the same time.

The old observation tower, pride of Vrhničani,
withstood weather conditions for almost 53 years, hikers maintained it regularly, but it couldn't go on forever, so a new tower was built.
