On this day, April 16, 1952, Slovenian alpinist Nejc Zaplotnik was born in Kranj. He died on April 24, 1983 in the Himalayas on the southern slopes of Manaslu, when an ice avalanche buried him.
Nejc Zaplotnik dedicated himself to alpinism in 1969 and from then until his tragic death climbed more than 350 ascents. His greatest achievements were:
He was the first to climb Jernejev steber in the north face of Dolgi hrbet,
first winter repeat of Trikot (Gradiška Tura),
ascent of Makalu in 1975 via the first ascent wall,
ascents of Gasherbrum and Everest, both via first ascent routes,
climbed Salathe in the south face of El Capitan in the USA,
and many other difficult ascents.
