Permits required for driving to Polog

The number of visitors to the Tolminka Valley has increased significantly in recent years, along with the burden on the local environment. Therefore, the Municipality of Tolmin will introduce traffic restrictions for motor vehicles on this route on weekends and holidays between June 25 and August 31 this year, while simultaneously strengthening public transport to the parking lot under the church of St. Spirit on Javorca.
The Tolminka Valley is facing several problems simultaneously due to the increased visits. Due to its configuration bordering a gorge, it is not possible to provide a larger parking lot without major interventions in nature, which is not acceptable in the Triglav National Park area. Heavy traffic load also impacts and degrades the natural environment where a number of protected plants thrive, and full safety cannot be ensured on the mostly gravel road; even attempts in this direction require extremely high investment costs.
The Municipality of Tolmin has therefore decided to experimentally restrict traffic this year by erecting a sign prohibiting traffic for all motorized vehicles under the church of St. Peter above Zatolmin. Supervision will be carried out by inspectors of the inter-municipal administration, and the ban on access to the Tolminka Valley will apply to motorhomes every day of the week, and to owners of other types of motor vehicles on weekends and holidays. Exceptionally, access will be permitted during this time to owners of real estate and land, as well as to all who prove entitlement to access (fishing and hunting associations, TNP employees, those working on pastures, individuals engaged in agricultural, forestry, and other activities in the Tolminka Valley …). The latter will be issued special permits by the Municipality of Tolmin, which can be collected at the reception office every working day from 8 to 12 o'clock.
During the traffic restriction period, a circular minibus will operate several times a day on the route from the parking lot at the Tolmin Outdoor Cinema (near the tennis courts) – Planina Srednica.
