PR - The central event of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Alpine Conservation Park took place in Trenta tonight.
In Trenta, the central event of the celebration of the 100th anniversary
of the establishment of the Alpine Conservation Park took place
Protection is existence, was the main message of today's central event commemorating
the 100th anniversary of the signing of the lease agreement for the establishment of the Alpine Conservation Park,
predecessor of the Triglav National Park, which took place in Trenta. It was attended by
numerous domestic and foreign guests as well as residents of the Triglav National Park and
the surrounding area.
In the year 2024 in the Triglav National Park, in the area of the Julian Alps and in the entire
Slovenian nature conservation, we are commemorating the 100th anniversary of the signing of the lease agreement for
the establishment of the Alpine Conservation Park, predecessor of the Triglav National Park
and the first protected area on Slovenian territory. The slogan of the 100th anniversary commemoration is: Protection is existence.
The commemoration of the jubilee is taking place under the honorary patronage of the President of the Republic
of Slovenia Dr. Nataša Pirc Musar, who was also the keynote speaker at the event. As
she said, this is a holiday for all those who live and work here and are most responsible for
preserving the natural environment, exceptional biodiversity and rich cultural heritage
in the park; it is a holiday for the entire Slovenian nature conservation and an important day for all
Slovenians. »The Triglav National Park is, I can say, a living museum of natural
and cultural heritage, but with the special feature that people also live in this open-air museum. The main challenge of our time are climate changes and these are unfortunately most present
right in the mountain world, and we humans add to the extent of the damage. You oppose this with wise management of the park in close cooperation with the local
community, both by determining carrying capacities, restricting traffic in alpine
valleys and passes, introducing quiet zones and restoring hummocky dry meadows.
I am aware that residents have to adapt to the restrictions of the special regime in
the protected area and that this is not always easy. At the same time, with cooperation and
smart directions, you have achieved that life in the park is also an opportunity with its
advantages,« the president of the republic highlighted among other things.

»The first 100 years of nature conservation in the Republic of Slovenia are successfully behind us. Without
cooperation and support of various stakeholders, we certainly would not have achieved all the goals,
similarly, international cooperation is important for achieving goals with the exchange of experiences and good practices and
education,« emphasized in his address the director of the Public Institution Triglav National Park (JZ TNP) Dr. Tit
Potočnik and among the other participants also greeted all the residents of the park.
»They are the ones who take care of the park and face the daily challenges of life in
the park, among other things, they also increasingly recognize the advantages of life in the park,« he added. »With the recognition of common goals and further mutual cooperation at
all levels, I believe that we will succeed in the future in realizing all the set
tasks. Given all the circumstances and the development of the park, let the slogan for the next 100 years be – protection and sustainable development,«
he concluded.
About current challenges, commitment to nature conservation, sustainable development,…
The State Secretary for Relations with the National Assembly in the Cabinet of the Prime Minister
Maša Kociper said that at today's celebration it is hard to shake off
the feeling of exalted pride, because we Slovenians recognized the importance so early
of nature conservation and thereby showed our deep respect for the natural.
»Today's ceremony also represents a holiday for the entire nature conservation in Slovenia.
The holiday is proof of our commitment to sustainable development while preserving natural
values and biodiversity,« she emphasized and added that sustainable development
of protected areas in Slovenia is key to preserving the natural and cultural heritage
of the country. It includes balancing efforts for nature conservation and the needs of local
communities as well as promoting responsible tourism practices. Various initiatives and
policies are established to ensure long-term protection and sustainable use of these
areas, with the aim of preserving biodiversity, ecosystem services and overall
environmental quality. »The future of the green deal will not be able to ignore the fact that we are
in a triple global crisis – climate, biodiversity and pollution – and that we will have to adapt activities in all sectors if we want to increase our climate
resilience and also leave preserved nature to future generations,« she further
emphasized.
The General Secretary of the Alpine Convention Alenka Smerkolj pointed out that
connecting and coordinated cooperation of the most diverse actors is the key to successful
dealing with today's challenges in the mountain world. »Many of them – such as
the climate crisis and the biodiversity crisis and increasingly conflicts in space use –

are most evidently shown precisely in this space. In this context, the Triglav National
park performs invaluable work in protecting natural and cultural heritage, sustainable
development and education. Your activities are in line with all three current
priority areas of the Alpine Convention and the current Slovenian presidency
– biodiversity, climate measures and quality of life. In addition, you raise awareness about the importance of your activities to different publics and
bring our common basic goals closer to visitors on the ground and experientially,« she
said. Slovenia is leading the presidency of the Alpine Convention under the slogan
»Quality life in the Alps for all«, thereby addressing both alpine mountain
communities and their future as well as alpine biodiversity and landscape
diversity and managing the challenges of climate change, which affect the quality
of life of all living beings.
Participants in the event from different parts of the Triglav National Park and
the Julian Alps Biosphere Reserve
The event was enriched with a cultural program by numerous performers and other
participants from different parts of the Triglav National Park and the Julian Alps Biosphere Reserve. With their contribution, they show the connectedness that in nature knows no
borders. Among the participants of the event were ambassadors and representatives of embassies
in Slovenia, representatives of domestic and foreign protected areas that closely cooperate with
the Triglav National Park and organizations of which the Triglav National Park is a member,
representatives of the Slovenian National Commission for UNESCO, mayors and representatives of municipalities
of the Triglav National Park and the Julian Alps Biosphere Reserve, representatives
of nature conservation and cultural conservation organizations, tourism institutes,
educational institutions, many residents of the Triglav National Park and others.
At the central event, holders of the Triglav National Park Quality Mark presented themselves at stalls,
the Community of Schools of the Julian Alps Biosphere Reserve,
Young Supervisor, Biosphere Areas of Slovenia and the Community of Natural Parks
Slovenia, the Julian Alps Community and the Cross-border Ecoregion Julian Alps.
