Record Number of Ascents on Everest

1.06.2007

In this climbing season, a record 514 people climbed the world's highest mountain, Mount Everest.

The president of the Nepal Mountaineering Association, Ang Tšering Sherpa, said that
the final number will be even higher, as there are still
some extreme climbers at the base or on the mountain who have not yet completed their feat. According to
him, 239 people climbed the mountain from the Nepalese side this year, while the rest headed to the world's highest peak from Tibet.

As
it seems, conquering this peak has become very popular in recent times, as
the previous record was set last year when 470 people climbed the mountain.

Most climbers who head to Mount Everest do so in
the spring, before the monsoon rains begin. Only a few
dozen climbers set out in any other season.

Sherpa said that the data on the number of climbers was provided to him by the Asian Trekking Agency and the Chinese Mountaineering Association.

Since 1953, when Sir Edmund Hillary and
Tenzing first climbed to the summit, around 2,000 people are believed to have conquered the world's highest mountain, among
them the oldest was a 71-year-old Japanese, and it was also conquered by
a climber with a prosthetic leg and a teenager. Historians believe that several
people have conquered the summit more than once, so in their opinion the number
of successful ascents to the summit is even higher.

During climbing on Mount Everest, 202 people have died in this period.
