Rockfall above Krnica

Hikers on the popular hiking trail between Kranjska Gora and Krnica were surprised by the sound of rumbling just before 4:30 PM. It turned out that a rockfall had been triggered from just below the summit of Dovški Gamsovec. Several cubic meters of rocks, stones, and debris thundered down towards the valley. The last major rockfall in this area occurred 15 years ago. Its consequences are still visible on the wall.

We were standing right at the memorial park in Mali Tamar on the path from the alpine Krnica valley, which is a popular starting point for the route to mighty two-thousanders like Škrlatica, Rakova Špica, and Rogljica. The tranquility among the mountaineers was suddenly interrupted by a loud noise. At first, it sounded like thunder, then we thought of an earthquake or a plane in trouble, then we spotted movement in the gray wall.

From below the 2442-meter-high Dovški Gamsovec, a large rockfall was triggered, lasting almost two minutes. "Huge cubic meters of material flew towards the valley, our first thought was the hut in Krnica. In 2007, an avalanche from Zadnja glava under Prisank was triggered, which is in the immediate vicinity of the hut. The consequences of that fall are still visible on the wall," David Plahutnik and Drago Jazbec point to the light brown scar.

And just such a trace became visible under Dovški Gamsovec when the rock slide finally stopped. We immediately called the hut in Krnica, where the caretakers, the couple Milena and Marko Primc Pustotnik, told us everything was fine, as the fall was about a kilometer away in air distance. They have been taking care of the hut and its visitors for almost four years, but they had never witnessed such a large fall: "Rumbling is often heard here, but it's smaller stone or snow avalanches, we haven't experienced one like this," they told our portal when they viewed the scene on the hill.
