Savica Waterfall from 1 August 2026 onwards with a new
visitor management system.

Savica Waterfall is one of the most visited natural features in Slovenia and one of the most
recognizable symbols of Triglav National Park. The large number of visitors
requires coordinated management that simultaneously ensures nature protection, visitor safety,
a quality visit experience and reduces the burden on the local
environment. Therefore, from 1 August 2026, a new model of

visitor management is being introduced in the Savica Waterfall area, based on cooperation between the Public Institute Triglav
National Park, the Public Institute Tourism Bohinj and the Municipality of Bohinj. Part of this system
is also the reintroduction of an admission fee, which will be implemented in accordance with
the Nature Conservation Act.

The Public Institute Triglav National Park, Tourism Bohinj and the Municipality of Bohinj
concluded on 24 July 2026 a stewardship agreement for the natural feature Savica – waterfall, as
the mentioned natural feature is officially named. This is the first such
concluded agreement for visiting and viewing natural features in
the area of Triglav National Park. After fulfilling the conditions in accordance with
the amendment to the Nature Conservation Act, from 1 August the charging of an admission fee for visiting the natural feature
Savica Waterfall in the Municipality of Bohinj will resume.
Visitors from the completed age of 16 will have to contribute four (4) euros for visiting Savica Waterfall,
while younger visitors will continue to be able to visit it
free of charge. With this we want to bring the visit closer to children and young people and encourage them from an early age
to get to know, understand and respect natural and cultural
heritage. The visit will also be free every first Sunday of the month, as
provided by the amendment to the Nature Conservation Act.
The entrance point will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in August and September, from 9 a.m. to
5 p.m. in October and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in November and December. In case of heavy rain, storms,
snowfall, ice, high water or danger of falling rocks, this natural
feature will be closed for safety reasons.
Public Institute Tourism Bohinj selected as steward on the basis of a publicly announced
expression of interest
The steward of this mentioned natural feature, Public Institute Tourism Bohinj, was selected
on the basis of a publicly announced expression of interest. “The stewardship agreement for the mentioned natural
feature between the Public Institute Triglav National Park and the Public Institute
Tourism Bohinj does not mean a transfer of competences, but is a mechanism for
coordinated implementation of the statutory competences of both public institutions. The horizontal
agreement for the first time in Triglav National Park connects the manager of
the protected area, the local community and the destination organisation into a unified
visitor management system, the goal of which is better nature protection,
a higher-quality visitor experience and reduced burden on the local environment.”
emphasises the director of the Public Institute Triglav National Park Uroš Brežan and
adds: “It is also important that we have managed to include in the system the long-standing

experience of the Tourist Association Bohinj, as without broad and solid local
partnerships we cannot expect good results.”
The Tourist Association Bohinj is the implementer of certain tasks for the steward of the natural
feature, Public Institute Tourism Bohinj. It must be borne in mind that the impacts of
visiting Savica Waterfall far exceed only the area of the waterfall, therefore no institution can effectively manage such
visiting on its own. Consequently, the need arose for joint implementation of public tasks to achieve a common goal in
the public interest.
Purposeful and transparent use of collected funds
The collected funds will be used purposefully and transparently. One part of the admission fee
covers the eligible costs of implementing the stewardship, the other part is intended for nature and
the local environment and is by law divided between the manager and the local community,
the funds are earmarked and are used primarily on the natural feature itself and
its area of influence.
As is known, in December 2025 the amendment to the Nature Conservation Act entered into force,
which uniformly regulated the payment for viewing and visiting natural
features throughout the country. Visiting is generally free of charge; payment is permitted only for statutorily
listed reasons when infrastructure arrangement is necessary for visiting, when due to the volume of visits measures for directing are implemented and when stationary traffic needs to be regulated. For natural features of national importance, the minister decides on charging and
the amount of the fee by decree; it can be charged only by the manager of
the protected area or the steward of the natural feature, and only if it is a public
institute and has concluded a stewardship agreement with the manager.
