Shepherd's hut on Krasji vrh

27.11.2025
Shepherd's hut on Krasji vrh - returning humans to the mountain landscape.

In October, a challenging but successful installation of a new shepherd's hut took place on Krasji vrh, which had to be delivered by helicopter due to the extremely difficult terrain. The project represents a significant asset for the local Agrarian Community Krasji vrh, which strives to preserve the tradition of alpine pasturing and simultaneously improve livestock safety at a time when attacks by large predators are becoming more frequent.

Installation in a challenging environment
Krasji vrh is known for its scenic location and steep terrain, which complicates classic access. Due to logistical difficulties, the hut was assembled in the valley and then airlifted to the alpine pasture. The helicopter delivery enabled precise placement of the structure in a safe and functional location, allowing the shepherd a good overview of the grazing areas.

Purpose and function of the hut
The new hut will serve as a permanent seasonal residence for the shepherd, who will be present on the alpine pasture throughout the entire grazing season. This means:
– Continuous monitoring of the herd.
– Quick response to weather changes and animal health issues.
– Preventive protection against predators, which have been more frequently present in the area in recent years (bear, wolf).
Permanent human presence is one of the most effective measures for protecting grazing animals, as it deters predators and enables better organization of pasturing.

Preservation of tradition and landscape
The shepherd's hut is not only a functional addition but also a symbol of returning humans to the mountain landscape. At a time when alpine pasturing is being abandoned in many places, such infrastructure is key to preserving: the cultural landscape, the tradition of shepherding, biodiversity enabled by natural use of the alps.
The Agrarian Community Krasji vrh demonstrates with this project that it is possible to combine modern solutions with the preservation of heritage.

Future of the bivouac
The first shepherd is expected to move into the hut at the start of the next grazing season. The hut is designed to provide: thermal insulation, basic kitchen and sleeping equipment, safe shelter from weather influences.
Whether this merely creates conditions for quality work and living in the mountain environment, which is crucial for the long-term sustainability of shepherding – or whether it will also serve tourism, remains to be seen...

Farewell to the times when shepherds knew how to build shelters from stone and wood! Farewell to the times when soldiers knew how to drill caverns into the world of rocks!
