Slovenian's Accident in Obertauern

15.09.2024
Backcountry ski descent in Obertauern fatal for 54-year-old Slovenian skier
42 rescuers searched for the Slovenian in poor conditions
Mountain rescuers found a dead 54-year-old Slovenian backcountry skier in the area of the popular Austrian ski resort Obertauern.

The Slovenian was searched for by 42 mountain rescuers with rescue dogs in poor weather conditions, but they found the man dead under the snow. The cause of the accident is still unknown, most likely it was not an avalanche, but a fall from a cliff.

The well-equipped 54-year-old set off for backcountry skiing in the Tures on Saturday afternoon, but when he did not return, his friends reported him missing.

"They said he is experienced and knows the area and that he set off for backcountry skiing in open terrain, but we didn't know where he went," explained Christian Binggl, head of operations and dog handler of the mountain rescue service in Obertauern, for Kronen Zeitung.

Rescuers found his car in the Grünwaldkopfbahn parking lot in Obertauern. 42 mountain rescuers together with police and rescue dogs searched the areas of Gamsspitzl, Zehnerkar, Gamsleiten, Seekarspitze and Seekareck. Conditions were challenging due to abundant fresh snow and poor visibility.

The missing man was finally found in the Seekareck area at 1987 meters above sea level, where they detected the signal of the avalanche rescue device. He was lying two meters deep under the snow, the attending doctor could only pronounce death at the scene.
