Snow conditions 10.1.2020
10.01.2020
Danger is 2nd degree on the European five-level scale - MODERATE.
Main problem: wind-blown snow
Danger pattern: Cooling after warm weather / warming after frost
Risk assessment
Avalanche danger is currently in the high mountains above about 1800 m altitude MODERATE, 2nd degree, lower down mostly LOW, 1st degree. Steeper slopes with wind-blown snow are dangerous, where a slab avalanche can be triggered with greater load. Below about 1800 m there is significantly less snow, so avalanche danger there is low.
Snow conditions
The snowpack is especially on sun- and wind-exposed locations crusty and hard. Snow on summits and ridges is heavily wind-drifted, often down to the icy base. Above 2200 m and in more shaded areas there are still areas with poorly settled snow. There is also considerable wind-blown snow in the form of deposits and slabs.
Forecast weather development
Sunny weather will prevail. At higher elevations it will cool tomorrow, the temperature inversion will temporarily weaken. On Sunday during the day it will warm up slightly again, but not as warm as in previous days. Today westerly wind will blow, in the northeast northeasterly, tomorrow northwesterly to northeasterly, on Sunday northeasterly.
Trend of snow conditions
The snowpack will continue to transform slowly. The crust will strengthen. Avalanche conditions will hardly change, only with cooling will snow in southern aspects remain frozen during the day.
