Snow conditions 10.2.2020
10.02.2020
The danger level is 2 on the European five-point scale - MODERATE.
Main problem: wind-drifted snow
Danger pattern: cooling after warm weather / warming after cold
Risk assessment
Avalanche danger above about 1900 m elevation is MODERATE, 2nd degree, lower down mostly LOW, 1st degree. South-facing slopes are particularly hazardous where, in areas with wind-drifted snow, even minor loading can trigger mainly small slab avalanches. Where new snow has been wind-packed, there is high RISK OF SLIDES on the icy base.
Snow conditions
At the end of the week it warmed slightly, the sun softened snow on sun-exposed slopes during the day. The southwesterly strengthened. The snowpack is mostly hard and locally icy, with some remaining wind-drifted snow that is softer in places. Slabs are present especially on south and east sides of ridges and saddles.
Forecast weather development
Today mostly cloudy and locally foggy. Occasionally light snow in the mountains. Very strong southwesterly wind. Tomorrow variable to mostly cloudy, summits occasionally in clouds. Smaller local snowfalls occurring. Moderate, locally occasionally strong northwesterly wind. On Wednesday more sun, occasional smaller local precipitation, snow in mountains. Mostly light wind from west to northwest direction.
Trend in snow conditions
Somewhat colder. Today and tomorrow the sun will have little influence on the snowpack. Little new snow. Wind will continue transporting snow and forming some deposits on south sides of ridges and saddles. Avalanche conditions will not change much. On Wednesday the sun will soften snow on sun-exposed slopes during the day.
