Snow conditions 11.1.2019

11.01.2019
Danger is level 1 on the European five-level scale - LOW.

Main problem:

Danger pattern: Cooling after warm weather / warming after frost

Risk assessment

Avalanche danger is LOW, level 1. The snowpack is stable. It is unlikely that any slab would release due to loading.

Snow conditions

Mainly dry and occasionally windy weather continues. Snow is mostly crusted over, in many places also hard and icy. Only in sheltered, northern slopes of the high Julian Alps can it be soft in places.

Forecast weather development

Today initially partly clear with occasional increased cloudiness, in the afternoon mostly clear. Weak to moderate northerly wind blowing, temporarily weakening in the afternoon. Temperatures below zero everywhere, but somewhat warmer air will gradually flow in. Cloudiness increasing at night, tomorrow moderately to mostly cloudy. Especially in high mountains moderate, occasionally slightly stronger northwesterly wind. Below around 1700 m weak wind. Zero degree level will rise during the day to altitude around 1600 m. Sunday mostly cloudy, only midday possibly temporarily partly clearing. Moderate northwesterly to westerly wind blowing, strengthening in the afternoon especially in mid-mountains, where it was weaker before. Night to Monday transient light precipitation.

Tendency of snow conditions

Snowpack state will not change much. It will remain stable, frozen and in many places hard and icy, hence risk of slips. Somewhere, especially night to Monday, a centimeter of snow may fall, which wind will blow away. Avalanche danger LOW, level 1.

Next bulletin: Monday, 14. 1. 2019
