AVALANCHE RISK ASSESSMENT

Avalanche danger is level 1.

The snowpack is stable.

The risk is low. No spontaneous avalanching.

SNOW CONDITIONS and CURRENT SNOWPACK STATE

There is very little snow in the mountains. The snowpack is mostly dry in shady aspects, elsewhere covered with a crust formed by daytime melting and nighttime freezing. In places, the snow is also hard and, at least at night and in the morning, frozen. During the day, snow on sun-exposed slopes softens, at night it freezes. Temperature conditions have changed over the week, but by this morning it has cooled below zero in the layer below about 1300 m above sea level, while between 1300 m and 2400 m the temperature is above zero. The snow has been slowly melting.

In the Julian Alps at 2500 m above sea level there is up to about 20 cm of snow, elsewhere in our mountains from 5 to about 10 cm. Significant snowpack is mainly only in the high mountains, and even there more in shady and sheltered locations and on plateaus.

FORECAST WEATHER DEVELOPMENT

Today it will be mostly clear. The wind will be light. Temperature will be above zero above about 1000 m, but the air will be dry.

Tomorrow it will be partly clear with occasional increased cloudiness, but with base high above the peaks. Mostly light westerly winds will blow. There will still be a temperature inversion, but the layer of cold air near the ground will be shallower than today.

On Sunday a southwesterly will blow. It will cool slightly at higher elevations, the layer of colder air in the lower air layers will mix and warm above zero. It will become cloudier in the hills of Notranjska and northern Primorska, also in the western and central Julians there will be more cloudiness. Some peaks of the Karawanks and Kamnik-Savinja Alps will be in clouds.

SNOW CONDITIONS TREND

The snow is already quite well transformed, only in shady aspects of the high mountains it is still softer. Especially in the morning there is a slightly higher chance of slips due to partially icy surface. The snow will continue to melt especially on sunny slopes.
