Snow conditions 11.4.2014

On Wednesday and Thursday it was partly clear with occasional increased cloudiness. Somewhat colder, the freezing level was on Thursday at around 1700 m a.s.l., by this morning it had lowered a bit more. The snow cover thinned during the day on sunny slopes, at night it refroze in the high mountains and partly in the mid-mountains, but not everywhere due to increased cloudiness. Avalanche conditions have hardly changed since Wednesday.



Significant snow cover extends on shady slopes to about 1400 m a.s.l., in gullies to about 900 m. Snow depth is quite uneven. Above about 2000 m in the Julian Alps there is still over 400 cm of snow, at 1500 m from 200 to about 300 cm. Elsewhere at 1500 m from 30 to 110 cm of snow, more in the western Karawanks. The snow cover is mostly well transformed.

At night the snow freezes and in the morning the snow cover is mostly hard, during the day under the influence of possible sun the snow softens.

Avalanche danger is level 1, increasing slightly during the day under solar influence.

The snow cover is mostly stable. Risk increases somewhat towards noon and afternoon on sunny slopes, where due to the sun the snow softens and becomes somewhat labile. Steep slopes are more dangerous. Lower down, individual wet snow slab avalanches are possible.



Today moderately to mostly cloudy, occasionally sunnier.

Some shower not excluded. Freezing level will rise to about 2000 m a.s.l. by evening. On Saturday after a partly clear morning more variably cloudy, in the afternoon local showers, above about 1600 m snowy. On Sunday somewhat sunnier and slightly warmer weather. Mostly dry. Avalanche conditions will not change much.

Next snow report will be issued on Wednesday, 16.4.2014 in the afternoon.



General avalanche danger is level 1 on the European 5-level scale.
