Snow conditions 11.5.2012

11.05.2012
This week it was sunny with gradually warmer weather.

Snow has melted at lower elevations, while higher up it has quickly transformed and settled, freezing at night only in the high mountains, but not even there in the last two days.

Consolidated snow cover remains mostly only in gullies and on plateaus. It is mostly well transformed, but the top layer of recently fallen snow is soft and wet. At 1500 m there is no longer consolidated snow cover, while at 2500 m in the Julian Alps there is about 170 cm of snow. Avalanche danger is level 1. The snowpack is stable, though in some gullies with greater additional load an avalanche from a steep slope may still be triggered.

Today it will be sunny and quite warm, but tomorrow around noon showers and thunderstorms will begin appearing from the north, with precipitation slowly intensifying in the afternoon and spreading south.

It will cool down, with the snow line dropping to around 800 m above sea level overnight into Sunday. On Sunday during the day, precipitation will subside. In the mountains, 5 to 30 cm of snow will fall. The amount will largely depend on elevation, with less precipitation also in the eastern part of our mountains. Especially above about 2000 m in the high mountains, avalanche danger will increase.

Our last report will be issued on Monday, 14.5.2012.

General avalanche danger is level 1 on the European five-level scale.
