General avalanche danger level - Friday, 11 April 2025
The danger is level 2 on the European five-level scale - MODERATE.
Main problem: wind slab, wet snow
Danger pattern: Spring situation
Risk assessment
The danger of avalanche release is in the morning and initially in the forenoon mostly LOW, level 1, but during the day in the high mountains it increases due to the influence of the sun and is mostly MODERATE, level 2. With cooling, the snow froze and mostly stabilised, now with thawing we expect typical spring conditions. Especially in shady locations you may encounter a slab which under heavy loading could release on sufficiently steep terrain. There is still a risk of slipping in many places, increased especially in the morning and initially during the day. On shadier spots it persists throughout the day.
Snow conditions
Especially around summits and ridges there can be small areas of wind-packed snow. The snowpack is mostly hard or crusty, also in shady areas. Before the cooling, wet snow avalanches released from steeper southern slopes, the avalanche debris is now frozen.
Forecast weather development
Today, Friday, mostly clear. Weak to moderate northerly to northwesterly wind, more pronounced in the high mountains. Temperature at 1500 m around 9 °C midday, at 2500 m around 1 °C. Saturday morning some cloudy veils, clearing during the day. Weak to moderate southwesterly wind. Temperature at 1500 m around 8 °C midday, at 2500 m around 0 °C. Sunday clouding over, southwesterly will strengthen considerably. In the afternoon light precipitation will appear in western Slovenia, in our mountain world mostly as rain. Monday mostly cloudy and foggy. Rain during the day, only in the highest parts of the high mountains possibly snow. Still windy and relatively warm - zero isotherm height mostly above 2500 m.
Tendency of snow conditions
Until the end of the week, snow conditions will be typically spring-like. Overnight the snowpack will freeze, during the day it will become soggy and unstable due to daytime thawing. The avalanche danger will thus initially be LOW, level 1, but during the day it will INCREASE and be MODERATE, level 2. Possibly some slab could also release.
