13.11.2016
General danger level - Saturday, 12. 11. 2016

The danger is level 2 on the European five-level scale - MODERATE.

Main problem: newly fallen snow, wind-drifted snow

Danger pattern: vn1 Early winter, surface hoar

Risk assessment

In the mountains up to this morning, 5 to 30 cm of snow has fallen, depending on altitude. Even in some mid-mountain areas, up to about 20 cm of snow has fallen. The avalanche risk is mainly in the high mountains, where there was already a snowpack before, MODERATE, level 2. Similarly on steep grassy slopes of mid-mountains and hills, where at least 20 cm of snow has fallen. Elsewhere the danger is LOW.

Snow conditions

The snowpack is soft and loose. Significant snow cover extends to altitudes around 700 m. The north wind is transporting snow into wind slabs and wind slabs have formed.

Forecast weather development

Today it will gradually clear from the west. A strong north wind will blow, transporting snow into wind slabs. Tomorrow sunny weather will prevail, in the afternoon it will become cloudy in the hills of northern Primorska and partly in the western Julian Alps, clouds will also gather in places on the slopes of the Ljubljana Basin. A bit colder.

Trend in snow conditions

Avalanche danger has increased to level 2 due to new snow. Due to cold weather, the snowpack will settle and stabilize only slowly. Tomorrow the wind will already be much weaker, so no new wind slabs are expected.

General avalanche danger is level 2 on the European five-level scale.
