Snow conditions 1.2.2016

2.02.2016
ASSESSMENT OF RISK

Avalanche danger is low, level 1, but there is a risk of slipping mainly on wind-exposed slopes and in the morning and partly forenoon on sun-exposed slopes.

The snowpack is stable. Only exceptionally in the high mountains on steep slopes and places with drifted snow with large additional load on the snowpack can you trigger a small avalanche.

SNOW CONDITIONS and CURRENT STATE OF THE SNOWPACK

In mostly dry weather snow conditions have not changed much. Snow has receded in the mid-mountains, and on southern slopes also in the high mountains. The zero isotherm height has fluctuated, today it was again above the highest peaks. On sun-exposed slopes the snow softened during the day and froze at night.

Snowpack height is very uneven. There is little snow in the mountains, especially in the mid-mountains. The most is in the high Julian Alps, up to about 100 cm. Elsewhere in the high mountains snow up to about 30 cm or even less. Below about 1800 m there is very little snow, only in the Julians at 1500 m about 20 cm. Snow on the surface is covered with crust or is hard, the crust mostly bears human weight. On wind-exposed slopes snow is considerably drifted, sometimes to bare or old, partly icy ground. There are many wind slabs.

FORECAST WEATHER DEVELOPMENT

Tomorrow dry or mostly dry weather. Southwesterly will blow, but will not carry snow. Cloudiness will be more than today, but, except in the west, bases above peaks.

On Wednesday cloudy. Precipitation will gradually spread over all Slovenia during the day. Snowfall line initially between 1300 and 1600 m, but will quickly descend.

TENDENCY OF SNOW CONDITIONS

On Wednesday it will snow on hard ground. Especially in the high mountains avalanche danger will increase. New wind slabs will form.

Next report will be issued on WEDNESDAY, 3.2.2016 in the morning.
