Snow conditions 12.2.2020

12.02.2020
The danger is level 1 on the European five-level scale - LOW.

Main problem: wind-blown snow, favorable conditions, wet snow

Danger pattern: Cooling after warm weather / thawing after frost

Danger pattern: Spring situation

Risk assessment

Avalanche danger is mostly LOW, level 1. Especially on southern slopes, exceptionally under heavy load you can trigger small slab avalanches. Numerous slopes are icy, therefore there is a greater RISK OF SLIPS.

Snow conditions

On Tuesday evening and in the first part of the night, short-term snow showers formed mainly in northern ranges, but mostly only about one centimeter of snow fell. It cooled down, the snowpack froze. Snow is mostly well transformed, only in some leeward and shaded locations there is still some less metamorphosed snow. Especially at sun- and wind-exposed sites the snowpack is also icy. On southern and eastern sides of ridges and saddles there is also some slush.

Anticipated weather development

Today sunny with occasional variable cloudiness, in the afternoon a short-term snow shower may form. Mostly weak northwesterly wind will blow. Temperature at 1500 m around -1, at 2500 m around -10 °C. Thursday initially mostly clear with some high cloudiness, in the afternoon clouding will begin first in the mid-mountains of the southwestern part of our mountains and hills. Southwesterly wind will strengthen, in the afternoon already strong especially in high mountains. Temperature at 1500 m around -1, at 2500 m in the morning around -9, midday around -5 °C, in the afternoon it will warm up somewhat more. In the night to Friday light snow possible for a short time, precipitation amounts will be small. Friday morning quick clearing. During the day partly clear with variable cloudiness. Strengthened northerly wind. Temperature at 1500 m around 0, at 2500 m -7 °C.

Trend in snow conditions

Avalanche conditions will not change much up to and including Friday. The snowpack will only soften in sun-exposed locations during the day, freeze at night. In the night to Friday mostly less than 5 cm of snow will fall, which the northerly wind will quickly redistribute to the hard base during Friday. Still high RISK OF SLIPS.
