Danger level Thursday, 12. 2. 2026 at

Danger level 3 – considerable

New and wind-blown snow in the high mountains, weak layers persist.
Even with a small additional load, a small slab avalanche can be triggered on wind slabs. A triggered slab avalanche or otherwise large additional load can exceed the carrying capacity of deep hard persistent layers, potentially triggering a deep and extensive (large) slab avalanche. Such weak layers are abundant especially on shady slopes above the forest, but not excluded elsewhere. Gliding avalanches also occur on steep smooth slopes.

Snow cover
Danger signs
dp.1: deep hard persistent weak layer
dp.4: cooling after warmth / warming after cold
In the past days, snow has crusted on sun-exposed slopes up to the highest peaks, remaining dry only on shady slopes in the high mountains. On this base, up to 10 cm of new snow fell since Tuesday afternoon, up to 30 cm in the South Julian Alps. The snow line was around 1300 m most of the time, rising to 1700 m towards the end of precipitation. The snow cover surface is crusted due to rain up to about 1700 m; a crust will form upon cooling.
The old snow cover consists of layers of somewhat bonded snow, mostly well interconnected. The bonding is poorer in wind-blown snow layers in wind slabs, which were formed during snowfall by the south wind. Deep below the surface in the old snow cover, there are several weak layers of facets and rounded grains.

Weather
Thursday will be cloudy and foggy with light precipitation, snow line between 1200 and 1400 m, up to 10 cm new snow, possibly more in the South Julian Alps. In the second half of the night, a strong SW wind will blow, calming slightly during the day.

Outlook
Avalanche danger will remain similar until the end of the week. Thursday will bring a little more new snow, Friday sunny.

Danger level 2 – moderate

Wind-blown snow, gliding avalanches.
Even with a small additional load, a small slab avalanche can be triggered on wind slabs. Gliding avalanches also occur on steep smooth slopes.

Snow cover
Above 1200 m, up to 30 cm new snow fell. New snow fell on a crusty base. The old snow cover consists of layers of somewhat bonded snow, mostly well interconnected. At the interface between snow cover and ground, depth hoar has formed.

Weather
Thursday will be cloudy and foggy with light precipitation, snow line between 1200 and 1400 m, up to 10 cm new snow, more near higher ridges. In the second half of the night, a strong SW wind will blow, calming slightly during the day.

Outlook
Avalanche danger will remain similar.
