1.03.2019
The danger is level 1 on the European 5-level scale - LOW.
Main problem: windpacked snow, weak layers, new snow
Danger pattern: Spring situation
Risk assessment
Avalanche danger in the mountains is mostly LOW, level 1. In the high mountains there are still wind slabs, slabs and soft slabs. Especially dangerous are locations with windpacked snow on shady and steeper slopes above the treeline, where you can still trigger a small avalanche with heavy loading of the snowpack.
Snow conditions
In the mid-mountains the snow is fairly well transformed, in the high mountains much worse, especially in gullies. The snowpack is mostly crusty, locally also hard and partially icy. Only in sheltered gullies of the high mountains is it still soft. Especially in the high mountains there are slabs and soft slabs. On wind-exposed sites the snow is strongly drifted and locally icy.
Forecast weather development
Today it will cloud over, especially in the afternoon isolated showers will form. In the afternoon the north to northwesterly wind will strengthen, cooling. Saturday will be moderately to mostly cloudy and cooler. Less cloudiness in the western Julian Alps. Light to moderate wind from northern directions will blow. Sunday will be fairly sunny with occasional increased cloudiness. West to southwest wind will blow. Monday will cloud over from the west, towards evening precipitation will begin in the west. Southwest wind will blow.
Trend of snow conditions
With today's cooling and more cloudy weather the snowpack will stabilize somewhat more. Small local showers will not affect avalanche conditions. In the next days due to lower temperatures and not fully sunny weather the snowpack will mostly remain dry and frozen and fairly stable. Conditions will begin to change Monday afternoon.
