Snow conditions 14.11.2016

14.11.2016
General avalanche danger level - Monday, 14. 11. 2016

The danger is level 2 on the European five-level scale - MODERATE.

Main problem: weak layers, wind slab, weak layers

Danger pattern: vn1 Early winter, ground hoar

Danger pattern: vn3 Rain

Risk assessment

Dry and cold weather prevailed in the mountains. The freezing level was initially still around 1000 m above sea level on Saturday, but had already dropped to the hills by Sunday. The snow therefore settled and transformed only slowly, mainly on Saturday in places with clearing on sun-exposed slopes. A thin surface crust formed there. The risk of snow avalanches is primarily in the high mountains where there was already a snowpack before, MODERATE, level 2. It is similar on steep grassy slopes of the mid-mountains and hills where at least 20 cm of snow fell. Elsewhere the danger is LOW.

Snow conditions

The snowpack is soft and powdery, only in some shady mid-mountain slopes there is a thin crust. Significant snow cover extends to sea level altitude around 1000 m, on the south and east and partly in Notranjska lower. There are many drifts, on wind-exposed sites the snow is almost completely blown away in places.

Forecast weather development

Dry weather will continue until midweek. Tomorrow warmer air will begin to flow in at higher elevations, the warmest air will be above us on Wednesday. The temperature inversion will intensify. Since the air will be relatively dry, the snowpack will transform and settle only slowly today and tomorrow,

Trend in snow conditions

Avalanche danger will decrease slowly. Presumably on Friday there may be occasional rain in the western part of the Julian Alps, so the snow will soften, slightly increasing the chance of spontaneous slab release from steep slopes.

General avalanche danger is level 2 on the European five-level scale.

Next bulletin: Wednesday, 16. 11. 2016
