Snow conditions 14.12.2018

14.12.2018
The danger is level 1 on the European five-level scale - LOW.

Main problem:

Danger pattern: Cooling after warm weather / warming after frost

Risk assessment

Avalanche danger is LOW, level 1. The snowpack is stable. In the high mountains there are many drifts, where the only possibility is that a slab might release on sufficiently steep slopes under heavy loading.

Snow conditions

Dry, cold and occasionally quite windy weather continues. The snow situation is very varied. Generally there is little snow, somewhat more only in the high mountains of the Julian Alps. In sheltered spots the snow is soft, on wind-exposed places hard or crusty, in many places heavily wind-scoured, even to bare ground. Significant snow cover starts between 1300 and 1500 m, sometimes higher.

Forecast weather development

Today it will be cloudy and mostly dry. A moderate wind from the east will blow. Tomorrow in the Julian Alps and the western and central Karawanks after a partly cloudy morning it will be quite clear. In the eastern part of our mountains it will clear in the afternoon. A somewhat strengthened northeasterly will blow. On Sunday it will be mostly clear at first, clouding over from the west in the afternoon. The wind will turn to southwesterly. It will warm up slightly, but temperatures still below zero. On Monday night light snow will begin. For now, no major snowfall is expected.

Trend in snow conditions

Due to low temperatures, the snow will transform and settle only slowly. No major new drifts due to wind. Avalanche danger will be LOW, level 1. Only in places with wind-drifted snow we still recommend some caution.
