Snow conditions 1.4.2020

1.04.2020
The danger is level 2 on the European 5-level scale - MODERATE.

Main problem: wind slab, wet snow

Danger pattern: Cold weather, poorly bonded fresh snow with wind

Risk assessment

Avalanche danger is above about 1700 m elevation MODERATE, level 2, lower down LOW, level 1. You can trigger an avalanche with significant additional load on steeper slopes with wind slab. On wind-exposed terrain there is a danger of slides on old and icy snow cover. Lower down, due to the small amount of snow, the danger is low.

Snow conditions

The top layer of snow that fell on Sunday and Monday is soft, but the snow is drifted to the old, hard base layer in many places. Wind slab is mostly on south and west slopes. Wind-exposed locations are hard and partly icy.

Forecast weather evolution

Today it will be mostly clear, during the day some shallow cumulus clouds will form, some peaks may occasionally be in clouds. Mostly light winds from northern directions will blow. Temperatures will be below zero. Tomorrow mostly clear with some shallow cumulus clouds. In the high mountains light northwest wind, lower down light wind from south to west directions. The freezing level will rise during the day to about 1400 m elevation. On Friday initially mostly clear, then cloudiness will increase. Peaks will occasionally be in clouds. Light wind. Slightly warmer, freezing level expected at about 1800 m elevation. Dry weather will continue at the end of the week.

Trend in snow conditions

Avalanche danger will not change much in the coming days. From Friday onwards, due to slightly warmer air mass and sunny weather, the snow cover on sun-exposed slopes will soften during the day and refreeze at night. A crust will form. In the shade, the snow will transform only slowly. Particularly in the morning and early afternoon, there will be a danger of slides on drifted areas.

Next bulletin: Friday, 3. 4. 2020
