Snow conditions 14.4.2020
14.04.2020
Danger is level 1 on the European five-level scale - LOW.
Main problem: favourable conditions, wet snow
Danger pattern: Cooling after warm weather / warming after cold
Risk assessment
Avalanche danger is mostly LOW, level 1. The snowpack is frozen and stable, with up to about 5 cm of new snow on it.
Snow conditions
Upon cooling, the snow has frozen and is mostly hard, locally icy. On the old, hard base there is up to about 5 cm of new snow. Since the snow is mostly hard, there is a risk of slipping.
Forecast weather development
Today it will already be mostly dry, slowly clearing in the afternoon. Moderate winds from northern directions will blow. Temperature will be below zero. Tomorrow clear. Still cold in the morning, warming up in the afternoon and the freezing level will rise above the highest peaks. Winds mostly from northern directions. On Thursday mostly clear and warm. A southwesterly will start blowing.
Trend in snow conditions
Already tomorrow afternoon it will warm up enough that in sunny weather the snow on sun-exposed slopes will crust and soften. Small wet snow avalanches may release from steep slopes, there you could trigger a wet snow avalanche especially on couloirs with greater load on the snowpack. Similar conditions also on Thursday and Friday. The snowpack will freeze overnight.
