Snow conditions 14.5.2014
14.05.2014
On Monday, in sunny weather, the new snow settled and also melted. On Tuesday it snowed again up to an altitude of about 1100 m. 5 to about 15 cm of snow fell, especially above 1500 m.
This morning, the freezing level is at an altitude of about 1800 m.
The old snow cover lies in the high mountains, and in gullies especially in the Julian Alps also below about 1200 m. The new snow is currently still up to an altitude of about 1200 m.
The avalanche danger is currently still 2nd degree in the high mountains, elsewhere 1st degree.
The snow cover is otherwise stable, but in the high mountains new snow can avalanche from steep slopes where there is still an old base. Also when loading the snow cover, caution is needed as new snow can slide beneath you.
Today it will be sunny, in the afternoon variably cloudy with some showers. Tomorrow it will cloud over from the east. By evening there will be some light precipitation only on Pohorje and in the eastern Karawanks. It will be cloudy on Friday, with occasional minor precipitation except in the western part of our mountains. There will be no noteworthy amounts of new snow. Therefore the avalanche danger will decrease again to 1st degree. At the end of the week warmer air will arrive and the new snow will quickly melt and also settle and transform in the high mountains.
As of today we are ending the regular reporting on the snow cover condition.
We will resume it again in autumn with the first abundant snowfall in the mountains after 15 November, or earlier if necessary.
The general avalanche danger is 2nd degree on the European five-level scale.
