Snow conditions 14.5.2021
14.05.2021
The danger is level 1 on the European 5-level scale - LOW.
Main problem: favourable conditions
Danger pattern: Spring situation

Risk assessment
Avalanche danger is mostly LOW, level 1. The snowpack is well bonded and generally stable. Release is possible only with considerable additional load on very steep slopes, where small wet snow slab avalanches can be triggered. Spontaneous avalanches are less likely; there are still numerous slabs that can collapse.

Snow conditions
In recent days, mountains were mostly cloudy and foggy with occasional showers. Precipitation was much less than forecast. Zero isotherm gradually lowered to around 2100 m a.s.l. Due to partly clear night and slight cooling, snowpack refroze somewhat in high mountains, melting slowed considerably. Above ca. 2200 m in high mountains, 5-10 cm southern snow fell, locally more with showers. New snow bonded relatively well to base. With mostly cloudy daytime weather, warming will not be pronounced, snow transformation and melting slower. Faster melting in mid-mountains. Cornices and slabs still present in high mountains, caution required. Risk of slipping persists.

Forecast weather development
Today mostly cloudy and foggy, local precipitation spreading from southwest over most ranges in morning. Thunderstorms possible. Snow level around 2000 m a.s.l., possibly lower with heavier rain. Mostly weak southerly winds. Temperature at 1500 m around 4, at 2500 around -2 °C. Saturday mostly cloudy and foggy, local precipitation initially in western hills, midday/afternoon elsewhere. Thunderstorms possible especially in hills of eastern Slovenia. Snow level around 2000 m a.s.l., lower with heavier rain. Mostly weak southerly winds. Temperature at 1500 m around 6, at 2500 around -1 °C. Sunday mostly cloudy and foggy with frequent precipitation intensifying afternoon. Thunderstorms possible. Snow level rising afternoon to around 2300 m a.s.l. Moderate to strong southwest wind. At 1500 m midday around 7, at 2500 m around 0 °C. Monday likely cloudy with frequent precipitation weakening during day. Cooling again, snow level dropping below around 2000 m a.s.l.

Trend in snow conditions
In mid-mountains, snowpack will continue receding; due to high humidity and cloudiness, no refreezing. High mountains occasional snowfall, above ca. 2000 m until Sunday morning 10-30 cm expected. With showers forming, new snow depths highly variable locally. Wet snow falling with mostly weak-moderate winds, bonding relatively well to base. Daytime cloud breaks occasional; where sun appears, new snow will quickly start sliding. Avalanche release danger will INCREASE to MODERATE, level 2 above ca. 1900 m a.s.l. With substantial rain and snow on high mountain summits, danger similar Sunday afternoon and especially Monday.

Next issue: Monday, 17. 5. 2021

Source: ARSO
