Snow conditions 15.11.2010
15.11.2010
At the end of the week, it was quite cloudy in the mountains, but clear in the high mountains and in the eastern part of our mountains. It was warm, the snow line was above 3000 m. The snow melted, but in the high mountains, due to dry air, it remained dry at first despite positive temperatures, but it has settled and become crusty by today. It has also settled somewhat and transformed.
In the high mountains of the Julian Alps, there is about 100 cm of snow at 2500 m, and about 10 cm at 1500 m. Elsewhere in our mountains, there is considerably less snow, mostly only in the high mountains.
The avalanche danger is level 1. The snowpack is mostly stable, with a possibility of triggering an avalanche only on northern slopes in the high mountains of the Julians.
The weather will not change today, but precipitation will start tomorrow. The snow line will be around 2200 m above sea level, but will drop to around 2000 m by evening and to 1500 m by mid-morning on Wednesday. Precipitation will mostly stop during Wednesday. Higher up, 10 to 20 cm of snow will fall, less lower down.
More precipitation in the Julians than elsewhere. On Thursday, it will be partly clear at first, then variable to mostly cloudy, with minor precipitation mainly in the Julians in the afternoon. The snow line will drop to around 1800 m above sea level by Thursday.
The next report will be issued on Friday, 19 November.
The general avalanche danger is low, i.e. level 1 on the European five-level scale.
