Danger level Monday, 16. 2. 2026 at

Danger level 3 – considerable

Southern Julian Alps, Central Julian Alps, Eastern Julian Alps, Western Julian Alps, Kamnik Alps, Savinja Alps and Koroška, Western Karawanks, Central Karawanks

New and windpacked snow in high mountains, weak layers persist.
Even with small additional load we can trigger a small slab avalanche on wind slabs. Triggered slab avalanche or otherwise large additional load can exceed the strength of deep persistent slabs, thereby triggering a deep and extensive (large) slab avalanche. Such weak layers are numerous especially on slopes above the forest, but not excluded elsewhere. On steep smooth slopes gliding avalanches also occur.

Snowpack
Danger patterns
dp.1: deep persistent slab
dp.4: cooling after warmth / warming after cold
In the last 3 days above approx. 1400 m a few centimeters of new snow fell, locally up to 20 cm. Snow above 1700 m fell on hard surface of old snowpack, lower on breakable crust or soft base. Strong northerly on Sunday morning built new small snow drifts, which did not bond well with frozen base.
Old snowpack consists of layers of somewhat cohesive snow, mostly well bonded together. In old snowpack deep below surface there are several weak layers of facets and rounded grains.

Weather
Overnight to Monday clouding over, weak to moderate westerly will blow. Showers possible during day. At 1500 m around -3, at 2000 m -5 °C.

Outlook
Avalanche danger will remain similar.

Danger level 2 – moderate

Southern foothills of Julian Alps, Eastern foothills of Julian Alps, Javorniki and Snežnik

Windpacked snow, gliding avalanches.
Even with small additional load we can trigger a small slab avalanche on wind slabs. On steep smooth slopes gliding avalanches also occur.

Snowpack
Old snowpack consists of layers of somewhat cohesive snow, mostly well bonded together. At snowpack-ground interface depth hoar formed.

Weather
Overnight to Monday clouding over, weak to moderate westerly will blow. Showers possible during day. At 1500 m around -3, at 2000 m -5 °C.

Outlook
Avalanche danger will remain similar.
