Danger level 2 – moderate

Southern Julian Alps, Central Julian Alps, Eastern Julian Alps, Western Julian Alps, Kamnik Alps, Savinja Alps and Carinthia, Western Karawanks, Central Karawanks

New snow with wind
A cold front with precipitation and northeast wind passed over the mountains on Monday evening. In total, up to Monday morning, an estimated 5 to 20 cm of dry snow is expected to fall. At the same time, a strengthened north to northeast wind will blow, building snow deposits on southern slopes. The new snow will bond poorly with the older snowpack. Greater danger will be primarily in concave terrain and gullies, where the depth of new snow will be greater due to snow deposits.

In addition to new snow, weak layers in the snowpack located deeper in the snowpack pose a problem. There are more such weak layers on slopes above the forest. Under heavy load exceeding the carrying capacity of these layers, a larger avalanche can also be triggered.

Danger patterns
dp.6: cold poorly bonded snow with wind
Showers occurred at the end of the week. 5 to 20 cm of snow fell, which froze in many places. During snowfall, graupel fell locally, which can form a new weak layer. Upon cooling, the older snowpack will freeze. On hard ground, 5 to 20 cm of dry snow will fall by Monday morning.

In the old snowpack, snow layers are mostly well bonded together, with a crust on top that mostly supports a skier's weight. Deep below the surface, several weak layers of facets and rounded grains appear.

Weather
On Tuesday morning, it will clear up quickly. During the day, variable lumpy cloudiness will form, summits and slopes will occasionally be in fog. In the afternoon and evening, brief snow showers will occur. Moderate wind will blow, strong north to northeast wind possible in exposed areas. Temperature at 1500 m around -3, at 2500 m around -10 °C.

Outlook
Wednesday will be very windy and cold. Wind will transport snow and build wind slabs. On Thursday, it will clear up, wind will weaken slightly.
