Snow conditions 18.11.2013

18.11.2013
For the weekend, the mountains had dry and partly sunny weather.

On Friday, there was snowfall in some places, somewhat more precipitation only in the Julian Alps and western Karawanks, where 10 to about 20 cm of snow fell, elsewhere less than 10 cm. On Saturday during the day it warmed up and the freezing level temporarily rose above the highest peaks. By today it has cooled slightly again and zero is at about 2000 m above sea level. The snow has settled somewhat and stabilized.

In the high mountains of the Julian Alps there is about 50 cm of snow. The snow cover is uneven. The snow is heavily wind-packed into drifts. In the Bohinj hills area there is a lot of wind slab in places. The snow cover is mostly stable, avalanche danger level 1. Only in areas with wind slab can thinner snow cover slide on steeper slopes.

In the week ahead, cloudy and occasionally foggy weather with occasional precipitation will prevail. More frequent in the western part of our mountains. Snow line until mid-week between 1300 and 1700 m, then it will drop to around 1000 m. By Friday up to 10 to 20 cm of snow may fall, less in the eastern part of the mountain world. Due to gradual precipitation, avalanche danger is not expected to increase, winter conditions will remain. In areas with wind slab in the hills on the southern side of Bohinj, greater caution is needed due to unstable base.

Next report on snow cover status will be published on Friday, 22.11.2013

General avalanche danger is level 1 on the European five-level scale.
