Danger level 2 – moderate

Southern Julian Alps, Central Julian Alps, Eastern Julian Alps, Western Julian Alps, Kamnik-Savinja Alps, Savinja Alps and Carinthia, Western Karawanks, Central Karawanks

New snow with wind
In the mountains 5 to 10 cm of snow fell, locally in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps area even somewhat more. On Wednesday morning and forenoon it will snow again. Expected to fall from 5 to cm of snow. Somewhat more - up to 20 cm in the Savinja Alps area and eastern Karawanks. At the same time the north to northeast wind is strengthening, transporting fresh snow and building new snow deposits on southern and western sides. New snow has bonded poorly with the older snow base. Greater danger especially in concave positions and gullies, where due to snow deposits the height of new snow is greater.

In addition to new snow, weak layers in the snow cover, located deeper in the snow cover, pose a problem. Such weak layers are more numerous on slopes above the forest. Under heavy load exceeding the load-bearing capacity of these layers, a larger avalanche can also be triggered.

Danger patterns
dp.6: cold poorly bonded snow with wind
Upon cooling the older snow base froze. On the harder base dry and light snow fell, which wind is now transporting. During snowfall graupel also fell locally, which can represent a new weak layer.

In the old snow cover the snow layers are mostly well connected to each other, on top there is a crust that mostly holds the weight of a skier. Deep below the surface several weak layers of faceted and depth hoar grains appear.

Weather
On Wednesday it will be mostly cloudy, initially light to moderate snowing. In the afternoon clouds will break up in places, light snowfall will mostly cease. In total up to 5 to 10 cm of dry snow can fall. Somewhat more in the Savinja Alps area and eastern Karawanks. Moderate wind will blow, on exposed locations possibly also strong north to northeast wind, which will transport fresh snow. Temperature at 1500 m around -2, at 2500 m around -8 °C.

Outlook
On Thursday initially clear, during the day variable cloudiness will form. Some peaks will be occasionally in clouds. Wind will weaken somewhat. Snow avalanche danger will remain similar.
