Snow conditions 1 May 2025
1.05.2025
General danger level - Thursday, 1 May 2025
Danger level is 2 on the European five-level scale - MODERATE.
Main problem: wet snow, gliding snow
Danger pattern: Spring situation
Danger pattern: Rain
Risk assessment
Avalanche danger above 2000 m is MODERATE, level 2. Small wet snow avalanches can release spontaneously or due to a skier. Release probability increases during the day. Spontaneous release of wet persistent slab avalanches is also possible.
Snow conditions
From Monday to Thursday, mornings in the mountains were sunny every day, then low stratus cloudiness formed covering the summits. It was warm, snow refroze only slightly and was already soft in the morning up to the highest summits. The snow cover is settling and melting everywhere, the snow line is rising. The main threats remain wet avalanches - small loose wet snow avalanches can release spontaneously or due to human influence especially on very steep slopes. In addition, some deep persistent wet snow slab avalanche can release spontaneously.
Anticipated weather development
Until Sunday mostly sunny, summits will be wrapped in low stratus cloudiness midday and in the afternoon. Even warmer, zero isotherm will rise to 3300 m altitude, at 1500 m around 14 °C, at 2000 m around 10 °C. On Saturday during the day the southwesterly will strengthen, therefore on Sunday cloudy on the Primorska side of the alpine-dinaric barrier, elsewhere still sunny. In the night to Monday rain will start, it will rain up to the highest summits. The snow line will gradually lower and may reach around 2000 m.
Trend in snow conditions
Snow conditions will remain similar until Sunday evening. With gradual temperature rise the snow cover will refreeze thinner each day, therefore wet snow avalanches may be triggered even in the morning. Precipitation in the night to Monday will worsen snow cover stability. Increase in frequency of spontaneous wind slab releases and triggering of persistent wet snow slab avalanches is expected.
