Snow conditions 20.12.2013

20.12.2013
Dry weather continues. In recent days it has cooled in the highlands, today the freezing level is below 1500 m. The snow has frozen. In the past days it has transformed, only in gullies it has remained mostly dry..

There is little snow in the mountains. In the high mountains of the Julian Alps there is from 80 to about 110 cm of snow, at 1500 m, and elsewhere in our mountains, up to about 40 cm. There is a lot of wind-packed snow, but wind-exposed locations are often bare. Significant snow cover extends on sun-facing slopes to above sea level around 1600 m, in shaded locations much lower. The snow is mostly crusty and sometimes icy, in gullies often dry. Avalanche danger is level 1. The snowpack is mostly stable, but in places with wind-packed snow and on steep slopes, especially in gullies, larger loads can trigger small avalanches.

Until Monday, the weather in the mountains will mostly be cloudy. There will be no significant precipitation, but in the Julians above about 1200 m, a few centimeters of snow may fall in places. Freezing level will be at sea level between 1400 and 1700 m. Snow conditions will hardly change.

The next snowpack report will be published on Monday, 23.12.2013.

General avalanche danger is level 1 on the European five-level scale.
