Danger level 2 – moderate
Southern Julian Alps, Central Julian Alps, Eastern Julian Alps, Western Julian Alps, Kamnik Alps, Savinja Alps and Carinthia, Western Karawanks, Central Karawanks
Fresh wind-blown snow
In the mountains 5 to 15 cm of snow fell in the last few days, somewhat more in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps area and in the Karawanks. At the same time a strengthened north-east wind is blowing, transporting fresh snow and building new snow drifts on southern and western aspects. The new snow has bonded poorly with the older snowpack. Greater danger exists especially in concave terrain and gullies, where the depth of new snow is greater due to drifts.
In addition to new snow, weak layers in the snowpack located deeper down present a problem. Such weak layers are more prevalent on slopes above the forest. Under heavy loading exceeding the carrying capacity of these layers, larger avalanches can also be triggered.

Danger patterns
dp.6: cold poorly bonded snow with wind
Upon cooling the older snowpack froze. Dry and light snow fell onto the hard base, which wind is now transporting. During snowfall graupel formed locally, potentially creating a new weak layer. Due to solar radiation snow on sun-exposed slopes will already consolidate somewhat.
In the old snowpack snow layers are mostly well bonded to each other, with a crust on top that generally supports a skier's weight. Deep below the surface multiple weak layers of facets and rounded grains occur.
Weather
Friday will initially be mostly clear, with some variable cumulus cloudiness developing during the day. A light to moderate north-east wind will blow. Temperature at 1500 m will be around 0 °C midday, at 2500 m around -8 °C.
Outlook
Saturday will be cloudy and often foggy on higher summits. There will be occasional light snowfall, light rain below around 1200 m. Precipitation amounts will be small. A light to moderate wind from easterly directions will blow. Snow avalanche danger will remain similar.
