Snow conditions 21.12.2018
21.12.2018
Danger level is 1 on the European five-level scale - LOW.
Main problem:
Danger pattern: Cooling after warm weather / warming after cold
Risk assessment
Avalanche danger is LOW, level 1. The snowpack is stable. It is unlikely that any slab avalanche could be triggered by a load.
Snow conditions
Mostly dry weather continues, only on Thursday 3 to 10 cm of snow fell in the mountains, almost nothing on the east. The snowpack condition is very varied. Overall, there is little snow, somewhat more only in the high mountains of the Julian Alps. In sheltered locations the snow is mostly soft, on wind-exposed sites and in sunny aspects hard or crusty, often heavily wind-packed, even to bare ground. Significant snow cover starts between 1300 and 1500 m.
Forecast weather development
Today it will be mostly clear in the mountains, below around 1400 m however, except in the eastern part of our mountains, cloudy and foggy. A strong southwesterly will blow. Tomorrow partly clear with occasional increased cloudiness, in the mid-mountains of the Julian Alps and especially in the western part of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps mostly cloudy and locally foggy. A westerly wind will blow, weakening in the afternoon. On Sunday partly clear with occasional increased cloudiness, which will mostly have its base above the summits. A light to moderate westerly to northwesterly wind will blow. On Monday a cold front will quickly pass from the northwest. In the morning cloudy and locally foggy, possible light transient precipitation. A northerly wind will start blowing and colder air will arrive during the day.
Tendency of snow conditions
The snowpack condition will not change much. The wind will transport the snow that fell on Thursday into slabs. Due to relatively high temperatures the snowpack will transform somewhat faster. Avalanche danger will be LOW, level 1.
