Danger level 2 – moderate

Southern Julian Alps, Central Julian Alps, Eastern Julian Alps, Western Julian Alps, Kamnik Alps, Savinja Alps and Carinthia, Western Karawanks, Central Karawanks

Fresh wind-blown snow
In the mountains, 5 to 15 cm of snow has fallen in the last few days, somewhat more in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps area and in the Karawanks. At the same time, a strengthened northeast wind is blowing, which transports fresh snow and builds new snow deposits on southern and western slopes. The new snow has bonded poorly with the older snowpack. The greater danger is primarily in concave terrains and gullies, where the depth of new snow is greater due to snow deposits.

In addition to new snow, weak layers in the snowpack located deeper in the snow cover pose a problem. There are more such weak layers on slopes above the forest. Under a large load that exceeds the carrying capacity of these layers, a larger avalanche can also be triggered.

dp.6: cold poorly bonded snow with wind
Upon cooling, the older snow base has frozen. Dry and light snow fell on the hard base, which is now being transported by the wind. During snowfall, graupel fell locally, which can represent a new weak layer. Due to the influence of the sun, the snow on sun-exposed slopes will already settle somewhat.

In the old snowpack, the snow layers are mostly well bonded together, with a crust on top that mostly supports the weight of a skier. Deep below the surface, several weak layers of facets and rounded grains appear.

Weather
On Saturday, it will be mostly cloudy and foggy in many places. There will be occasional light snowfall, and light rain below sea level around 1200 m. Small amount of precipitation. A weak to moderate wind from eastern directions will blow. Temperature at 1500 m around -1, at 2500 m around -8 °C.

Outlook
On Sunday, it will be predominantly cloudy, with possible light precipitation initially. It will remain relatively cold and windy. The avalanche danger will remain similar.
