Snow conditions 23.11.2018

23.11.2018
The danger is level 1 on the European 5-level scale - LOW.

Main problem:

Danger pattern: Cooling after warm weather / thawing after frost

Risk assessment

Avalanche danger is LOW everywhere, level 1. The snow cover is stable. On leeward slopes snow is deposited in wind slabs, on exposed slopes it is bare in many places.

Snow conditions

The snow cover is thin, 5 to about 20 cm thick, thinner in the eastern part of our mountains. Due to thawing, the snow has settled and partially transformed even in the high mountains.

Forecast weather evolution

Cloudy and foggy weather will prevail, only today in the high mountains mostly partly clear in the forenoon. Already tonight precipitation will begin from the west, spreading eastward tomorrow during the day. On Pohorje and in the eastern Karawanks there will be little precipitation and dry periods will be quite long, elsewhere more precipitation. Precipitation will occur occasionally on Sunday as they return from the southeast, and on Monday, but mostly dry in the west. The snow line will be on Saturday between 1800 and 2000 m, on Sunday it will drop by a few hundred meters, and on Monday night even lower to about 1000 m above sea level.

Trend in snow conditions

At lower elevations, the snow cover will melt due to higher temperatures and rain. New snow will initially accumulate mainly above about 2000 m above sea level, on Sunday and Monday also lower. In the high mountains of the Julian Alps up to about 40 or 50 cm of snow may fall by Monday morning, elsewhere the snow cover will thicken somewhat mainly on Sunday, depending on the exact distribution and amount of precipitation. The new snow will bond well with the old base. On Saturday the southwest wind in the high mountains will form drifts, then the wind will be much weaker, on Sunday south to southeast, on Monday north to east directions. In the high mountains of the Julian Alps, AVALANCHE DANGER WILL SOMEWHAT INCREASE by Saturday evening.

Next bulletin: Monday, 26.11.2018
