Snow conditions 23.4.2014

23.04.2014
On Monday there were still precipitation in the mountains, it snowed mostly above 1700 m a.s.l. In the high mountains 5 to 15 cm of snow fell, which slid on steep slopes. On Tuesday it was fairly sunny weather with individual showers. The temperature rose slowly, the snow line rose to 2500 m a.s.l. by this morning. The snow cover mostly refroze overnight, but the new snow has not yet transformed.

Significant snow cover extends on shady slopes to about 1500 m a.s.l., in gullies to about 1000 m. Above about 2000 m in the Julian Alps there is snow from about 400 cm to over 500 cm, at 1500 m from 150 to about 250 cm.

Elsewhere at 1500 m snow is mostly only on plateaus and in gullies.

The snow cover is mostly well transformed, on the old base there is newer, only partially transformed snow.

Avalanche danger is mainly in the high mountains level 2, elsewhere level 1.

The snow cover is otherwise mostly stable, only the layer of new snow that fell between Saturday and Monday is still somewhat unstable. Especially on steep slopes, individual small avalanches can still release mainly midday and in the afternoon. Along ridges, a cornice can also break off. In lower elevations the snow cover is soaked to the ground and on steep slopes individual avalanches of old, soaked snow are possible.

Today it will be moderate, occasionally mostly cloudy and in the afternoon individual showers. Tomorrow, Thursday, mostly cloudy and mostly without showers. The sun's influence on the snow cover will also be negligible on Thursday. The newer snow layer will transform and settle and slowly bond better with the base. Temperature conditions will hardly change. The avalanche risk will slowly decrease.

The next report on the snow cover status will be issued on Friday, 25.4.2014 in the afternoon.

General avalanche danger is level 2 on the European five-level scale.
