Snow conditions 24.1.2020

24.01.2020
Danger is level 1 on the European five-level scale - LOW.

Main problem: wind slab

Danger pattern: Cooling after warm weather / thaw after frost

Risk assessment

Avalanche danger is LOW everywhere in our mountains, level 1. Avalanche conditions have not changed significantly. More dangerous today around midday and early afternoon on sun-exposed slopes: snow has crusted somewhat and the chance of triggering a slab avalanche will be slightly higher.

Snow conditions

Dry weather continues. On sun-exposed aspects the snow surface crusted during the day, froze overnight. In the shade of the high mountains snow remained poorly transformed. The snowpack is mostly hard or crusty, locally icy. On wind-exposed aspects snow is hard and icy, heavily wind-packed. Only in shady high-mountain aspects is snow locally still soft or covered by a thin crust.

Forecast weather development

Today mostly clear with temperature turnaround, weak to moderate southwest wind blowing. Freezing level above highest peaks, but air dry. Tomorrow and Sunday cloudy, occasional light precipitation locally. Snow line mostly between 900 and 1200 m above sea level. Southwest wind blowing, weakening on Sunday. Monday temporary partial clearing, towards evening cloudiness increasing again from the west.

Trend in snow conditions

Avalanche conditions will not change much. Due to cloudiness and cooling snow will remain frozen and hard. Precipitation on Saturday and Sunday very little and will not affect snow and avalanche conditions. High risk of slips remains.
