Snow conditions 24.4.2020

24.04.2020
Danger is 2nd degree on the European five-level scale - MODERATE.

Main problem: wet snow, favorable conditions

Danger pattern: Spring situation

Risk assessment

Avalanche danger is today mostly LOW, 1st degree. The snowpack is mostly stable, in the afternoon snow softens and becomes somewhat labile in sunny weather, and freezes at night. Therefore, the danger of triggering wet snow avalanches on steep sun-exposed slopes from late morning to late afternoon is MODERATE, 2nd degree; at that time you may trigger a small snow avalanche or snow may slide under you and you may slip.

Snow conditions

The snowpack ripens during the day and freezes at night. This process is slower in shady locations in the high mountains. Lower down, snow is melting. Snow is mostly well transformed and stable, except in shady locations in the high mountains.

Forecast weather development

Today clear in the morning, in the afternoon increasingly high cirrus clouds. Weak winds from westerly directions. Temperature at 1500 m around 10, at 2500 m around 3 °C. On Saturday partly clear with occasional increased cloudiness. Showers possible in the afternoon. Weak winds from westerly directions. Temperature at 1500 m around 10, at 2500 m around 2 °C. On Sunday and Monday variable to mostly cloudy, occasional showers. Thunderstorms possible. Snow line at around 2300 m elevation. Mostly weak winds from westerly directions. Tomorrow mostly clear, weak to moderate easterly wind. Temperature at 1500 m around 5, at 2500 m around 0 °C. Also on Thursday and Friday sunny weather will prevail. Gradually slightly warmer.

Trend in snow conditions

The ripening process will continue. During the day, snow will ripen on sun-exposed aspects, freeze at night. Only on steep sun-exposed slopes might you trigger a small wet snow avalanche with greater load. In shady locations in the high mountains, snow will remain frozen longer. On Sunday and Monday, with less sun, this daily process will be less pronounced; in many places in the high mountains, snow will not ripen during the day. Spontaneous avalanching is also unlikely on steep sun-exposed slopes. Risk of slips in the morning hours.
