24.04.2025
General danger level - Thursday, 24. 4. 2025
The danger is level 2 on the European five-level scale - MODERATE.
Main problem: wet snow, gliding snow
Danger pattern: Spring situation
Risk assessment
The avalanche danger is MODERATE, level 2. The snowpack is mostly wet and saturated to the ground in many places. Cooling will somewhat stabilise the snowpack above 2000 m, lower down the possibility of spontaneous release of wet snow avalanches and cornice falls remains.
Snow conditions
Since Monday it has been mostly cloudy and warm, even on the highest peaks above the glacier. There were occasional showers. Snow is wet up to the highest peaks, due to cloudy weather it did not freeze overnight. The snow line is rising higher every day. Snow conditions are typical for late spring.
Forecast weather development
Tomorrow, Friday, cloudy with occasional precipitation, possibly thunderstorms. It will cool slightly, snow above approx. 1800 m, up to 20 cm of snow possible there. Saturday and Sunday also cloudy with occasional precipitation, snow above 2200 m, less precipitation in the west. At 1500 m around 5 °C, at 2000 m around 1 °C.
Trend in snow conditions
Slightly cooler weather will stabilise the snowpack above 2000 m. Lower down snow will remain wet, settle and thin. Overnight the snowpack will not refreeze, so wet loose snow avalanches on very steep slopes may be triggered in the morning. Spontaneous release of wet slab avalanches, including full-depth avalanches, is still possible, as is cornice fall.
