Snow conditions 25.3.2019

25.03.2019
The danger is level 2 on the European five-level scale - MODERATE.

Main problem: weak layers, wind slab

Risk assessment

Avalanche danger above sea level around 1700 m is MODERATE, level 2. Lower down it is LOW in the morning and partly in the forenoon, level 1. Steep slopes in the high mountains are especially dangerous, particularly areas with wind slab where, with greater loading of the snowpack, you can trigger a small avalanche.

Snow conditions

The snowpack is mostly crusted, except in some shaded high mountain locations where there may still be some soft snow. Particularly on southern and western sides of ridges and passes there is considerable wind slab, wind-exposed areas are scoured to the old, hard and partly icy base layer in places. Today the snowpack is changing due to precipitation!

Forecast weather evolution

Today cloudy, precipitation will gradually spread from the north to the south in the afternoon. In the evening or overnight to Tuesday it will ease. Cooling. The snow line will mostly drop to sea level around 1000 m in the area of our mountains. 5 to 20 cm of snow possible. Tomorrow partly clearing, then occasionally cloudier. Strong northeasterly wind, temperatures below zero. Wednesday moderately to mostly cloudy and cold, northeasterly wind continuing.

Trend in snow conditions

Today snowing in the mountains, initially above around 1500 m, then to around 1000 m. New snow will bond poorly to the base only in the high mountains, north and northeast winds will transport it into wind slabs. New snow will slightly increase the risk of triggering an avalanche. Steep slopes in the high mountains and areas with wind slab will be dangerous. Due to low temperatures avalanche conditions will not change much thereafter.

Next bulletin: Thursday, 28. 3. 2019
