Snow conditions 25.3.2020

25.03.2020
The danger level is 2 on the European five-level scale - MODERATE.

Main issue: favourable conditions, wind-drifted snow, wet snow

Danger pattern: Cold weather, fresh snow poorly bonded by wind

Risk assessment

The avalanche danger is currently above approximately 1900 m MODERATE, level 2, and lower down LOW, level 1. You can trigger an avalanche with a large additional load on areas with wind-drifted snow. Due to the strong northeast wind, these are mostly on south and west slopes.

Snowpack

The snowpack is mostly hard and crusted, only in shaded high mountain locations is the snow somewhat soft in places. Most of the wind-drifted snow is on the south and west sides of ridges and saddles. Wind-exposed areas are icy in places, especially ridges.

Forecast weather evolution

Today it will be cloudy and foggy in places. There will be light snowfall especially in the eastern Karawanks and Kamnik-Savinja Alps. A strong northeast wind will blow. Temperatures will be below freezing. Tomorrow, Thursday, it will be cloudy and foggy in many places. Light snowfall in most of our mountains. The northeast wind will strengthen further. In the afternoon, the freezing level will rise to about 700 m. Friday will also be mostly cloudy with occasional light snowfall that will ease during the day. Freezing level around 1000 m. The wind will ease somewhat. Saturday and Sunday will be dry and noticeably warmer.

Trend in snow conditions

Snow conditions will not change much today, tomorrow, and mostly also Friday due to cold weather. With moderate to strong northeast wind, areas with wind-drifted snow will increase somewhat. Above about 1900 m, avalanche danger will remain MODERATE, level 2, lower down low level 1. There will still be considerable GLIDE AVALANCHE DANGER. On Saturday and Sunday, due to significant warming, individual wet snow avalanches may release on sun-exposed steeper slopes, otherwise the snowpack will become somewhat unstable, especially if there is little cloud cover.

Next bulletin: Friday, 27.3.2020
