Snow conditions 25.4.2014
25.04.2014
Variable weather with local precipitation continues, without significant amounts. Freezing level is at around 2600 m.
The snowpack freezes overnight due to moist air only in the high mountains and not always even there, lower down only in frost hollows. Snow melts especially on sun-exposed slopes.
Significant snow cover extends on sun-exposed slopes up to around 1600 m, in shady areas to around 1000 m. Above around 2000 m in the Julian Alps, snow depth is from around 400 cm to over 500 cm, at 1500 m from 140 to around 240 cm.
Elsewhere at 1500 m snow is mostly only on plateaus and in shady areas.
The snowpack is mostly well transformed, on the surface there is poorly transformed newer snow.
Avalanche danger is mostly 2nd degree.
The snowpack is generally stable, but due to relatively warm weather, a slab avalanche of wet snow can release on steep, bare slopes. The possibility for it is lower in the high mountains.
Variable and quite cloudy weather will continue. On Saturday, precipitation will be local and light. More frequent and somewhat more pronounced on Sunday. Snow line will be at around 2200 m, freezing level at around 2600 m. Avalanche conditions will change somewhat on Sunday, when up to 10 cm of snow will fall in the high mountains, lower down rain will further soak the snowpack.
The next snowpack report will be issued on Monday, 28.4.2014 in the afternoon.
General avalanche danger is 2nd degree on the European five-level scale.
