Danger level 3 – considerable

Southern Julian Alps, Central Julian Alps, Eastern Julian Alps, Western Julian Alps, Kamnik Alps, Savinja Alps and Carinthia, Western Karawanks, Central Karawanks

With warming, the danger of wet snow avalanches has increased. Wind-packed snow in the high mountains!
The main dangers will be wet snow avalanches and glide avalanches. With daytime warming, the danger will increase significantly especially on sun-exposed slopes.

There are still many spots with wind-packed snow in the high mountains, where even a small load can trigger a large slab avalanche. Weak layers in the snowpack also pose a problem. If the load exceeds the carrying capacity of deeper weak layers, a deep and large avalanche can be triggered. There are many such weak layers especially on slopes above the forest.

Snowpack
Danger patterns
dp.1: deep hard slab weak layer
dp.10: spring conditions
The old snowpack is built from layers of somewhat cohesive snow, which are mostly well bonded together. Deep below the surface in the old snowpack, several weak layers of facets and rounded grains appear.

On this base, during the last snowfall in the high mountains, 50 to 80 cm of new snow fell, which has already settled somewhat. Due to higher temperatures and sun, a more or less pronounced crust has formed. Snow wets during the day and refreezes at night. In the mid-mountains, the snowpack is also melting.

Weather
On Wednesday it will clear up, during the day only some shallow cumulus clouds will form. Wind will be light in the mid-mountains. In the high mountains, moderate northerly winds will initially blow, weakening during the day. Temperature at 1500 m will be around 5 °C midday, at 2500 m around 1 °C.

Outlook
Mostly clear and warm weather will continue. In the next days, typical spring conditions are expected. The snowpack will freeze at night with very dry air humidity, during the day it will wet considerably due to sun influence all the way to the highest peaks.

Danger level 2 – moderate

Southern foothills of the Julian Alps, Eastern foothills of the Julian Alps, Javorniki and Snežnik

Due to warming, small wet snow avalanches possible
The snowpack from the last snowfall has become unstable due to warming. The danger of wet snow avalanches has increased mainly on very steep slopes. Glide avalanches possible on grassy slopes. This applies only to the highest peaks, where there is somewhat more snow.

Snowpack
Danger patterns
dp.4: cooling after heat / warming after cold
With warming, much of the snow from the last snowfall has melted away. The snow line is around 1200 m. Higher up, the snow from the last snowfall has wettened considerably and is transforming faster.

Weather
On Wednesday it will clear up, during the day only some shallow cumulus clouds will form. Wind will be light. Temperature at 1000 m around 9 °C midday, at 1500 m around 4 °C.

Outlook
In the next days, typical spring conditions are expected.
The snowpack will freeze at night, during the day with sun and high temperatures the snow will transform and melt faster.
