Snow conditions 25. 4. 2025

25.04.2025
General avalanche danger level - Friday, 25. 4. 2025
The danger is level 2 on the European five-level scale - MODERATE.
Main problem: wet snow, gliding snow
Danger pattern: Spring situation

Risk assessment
The avalanche danger is MODERATE, level 2. The snow cover is mostly wet and in many places saturated to the ground. Cooling has somewhat stabilized the snow cover above 2000 m. Exception is the high mountains of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and Karawanks, where more fresh snow has fallen; there smaller to medium-sized avalanches of both wet and dry snow are possible.

Snow conditions
Cooling overnight into Friday brought the snow line lower. During heavier precipitation, the snow line in the Karawanks and Kamnik-Savinja Alps dropped today to around 1200 m. In the mid-mountains up to 5 cm of southern snow fell, in the high mountains up to 30 cm. Considerably less precipitation occurred in the Julian Alps, where around 5 cm of snow fell in the high mountains. In the mid-mountains it only rained. Cooling has somewhat stabilized the snow cover and slowed melting. The snow line is still moving higher every day. Snow conditions are typical for late spring.

Forecast weather development
Today, Friday, cloudy and foggy weather will continue with occasional precipitation weakening in the afternoon. Snow line between 1200 and 1700 m. Lower in the area of Kamnik-Savinja Alps and Karawanks. In the afternoon, the northerly wind will strengthen. Tomorrow, Saturday, mostly cloudy and foggy. Light to moderate precipitation in the morning and forenoon. Snow line will rise to around 2200 m. In the afternoon, clouds may break here and there. Especially in the morning and forenoon, a strong northerly wind will blow. In the afternoon, the wind will weaken. Temperature at 1500 m around 5, at 2500 m around 0 °C. On Sunday and Monday mostly cloudy and often foggy with short sunny periods. Mostly weak easterly winds. Temperature will remain similar, slightly warmer on Monday.

Trend in snow conditions
Slightly cooler weather will cause stabilization of the snow cover above 2000 m. Lower down, snow will remain wet, settle and thin. At night the snow cover will mostly not freeze, so wet loose snow avalanches on very steep slopes may be triggered already in the forenoon. Spontaneous release of wet persistent slab avalanches, including full-depth avalanches, is still possible, as is cornice fall. Slightly higher avalanche danger in the high mountains of Kamnik-Savinja Alps and Karawanks, where more new snow has fallen.
