Snow conditions 26.2.2018
26.02.2018
General danger level - Monday, 26. 2. 2018
Danger is level 2 on the European five-level scale - MODERATE.
Main problem: wind slab
Danger pattern: Cold weather, fresh snow poorly bonded by wind
Risk assessment
Avalanche danger in the mountains is mostly MODERATE, level 2. Steep slopes and areas with wind-drifted snow above the treeline are particularly hazardous. There you can trigger an avalanche with a large load, and on steep places with wind slab even with a small load in some places. Spontaneous releasing is unlikely.
Snow conditions
Due to the cold weather, the snowpack is mostly soft and powdery. Locally a crust has formed due to wind, wind-exposed locations are heavily scoured and can therefore also be hard. There are many slabs.
Forecast weather evolution
Today it will be cloudy and locally foggy. Occasional snow flurries are possible, but there will be no significant precipitation. Mostly moderate northeast wind will blow. Tomorrow it will also be mostly cloudy, with less cloudiness possibly in places on Bovško. It will be cold, with weak, locally moderate northeast wind. In the night to Wednesday it will partly clear and during the day it will be mostly clear. It will warm up slightly in the heights. Weak north wind will blow. On Thursday it will gradually cloud over from the southwest, light snow will start in the west towards evening. It will be a little warmer especially in higher locations.
Trend in snow conditions
Avalanche conditions will hardly change in the next few days due to the cold weather. The snow will remain dry and loose, the northeast wind will continue to transport snow into drifts. Due to low temperatures, the formation of depth hoar is possible especially in cold hollows.
