New and wind-drifted snow - strong north wind blowing in the high mountains
On Wednesday night, precipitation will occur in the north. The snow line will initially be at around 1500 m and will quickly descend. Snowfall will weaken by Thursday morning. By then, approximately 20-40 cm of new snow is expected in the mountains. After the passage of the cold front, a strong north wind will blow, transporting the new snow and building new snow deposits on southern slopes.

The main dangers are new and wind-drifted snow. The danger is increased especially in concave terrains and gullies, where the depth of new snow is greater due to snow deposits.

In addition to new snow, weak layers in the snowpack located deeper in the snow cover may pose local problems. There are more such weak layers on slopes above the forest. Under high load exceeding the carrying capacity of these layers, a larger avalanche may also be triggered.

Conditions are demanding, visit to the high mountains not recommended!

Danger patterns
dp.4: cooling after heat / warming after cold
With the passage of the cold front, approximately 20-40 cm of dry and light snow will fall in the mountains, which will bond poorly with the old snow base. During previous snowfall, graupel fell locally, representing a potentially dangerous weak layer. Locally, graupel layers are 5-10 cm thick, possibly more.

In the old snow cover, snow layers are mostly well bonded together. Deep below the surface, several weak layers of faceted and rounded grains occur, mainly on shaded sides.

Weather
Cloudy and foggy with snowfall, strongest in the morning and forenoon. A strong wind from northern directions will blow, gusting up to speeds between 70 and 100 km/h. It will cool significantly. At midday, temperature at 1500 m around -4 °C, at 2500 m around -10 °C. Combined with low temperatures, the feeling of cold in the mountains will be very pronounced!

Outlook
Avalanche and weather conditions will remain demanding. On Friday, another 5-15 cm of new snow can be expected. A strong north wind will continue to blow, building new snow drifts.
