New and wind-drifted snow - strong north wind blowing in the high mountains
On Wednesday night, precipitation occurred in the north. The snow line was initially around 1500 m and quickly descended. Snowing temporarily weakened on Thursday noon. After the passage of the cold front, a strong north wind blew, transporting new snow and building new snow deposits on southern slopes. It will snow on Friday as well, more pronounced in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and the eastern part of the Karawanks. In total, about 20-30 cm of new snow is expected to fall in the mountains.
The main hazards are new and wind-drifted snow. The danger is increased especially in concave terrains and gullies, where due to snow deposits the depth of new snow is greater.
In addition to new snow, weak layers in the snowpack located deeper in the snow cover can pose local problems. There are more such weak layers on slopes above the forest. Under high load exceeding the carrying capacity of these layers, a larger avalanche can also be triggered.
Conditions are demanding, due to strong wind windthrows may occur below the forest line. We advise against visiting the mountain world!

Danger patterns
dp.4: cooling after heat / warming after cold
About 20-30 cm of dry and loose snow is expected to fall in the mountains. During snowfall, a strong north wind blows, which will blow snow to the old base in many places. During previous snowfall, graupel fell locally, which represents a potentially dangerous weak layer. Locally, graupel layers are 5-10 cm thick, possibly more.
In the old snow cover, snow layers are mostly well bonded together. Deep below the surface, several weak layers of faceted and rounded grains appear, mainly on shady slopes.
Weather
Mostly cloudy, especially in the eastern mountain ranges there will still be occasional snowfall. A strong, in places gale-force wind from northern directions will blow, gusting over 100 km/h. Overnight to Saturday, the wind will gradually subside. At midday, temperature at 1500 m around -4 °C, at 2500 m around -8 °C. Combined with low temperatures, the wind chill in the mountains will be very pronounced!
Outlook
On Saturday partly clear with occasional moderate cloudiness. Wind will weaken, slightly warmer again. On sun-facing slopes, snow will wet during the day and freeze at night.

New and wind-drifted snow - strong north wind blowing in the high mountains
It will snow until Friday, the snow line will be during the day around 700 m. In the mountains, about 30-50 cm of new snow is expected to fall. At the same time, a strong wind from northern directions blows, transporting new snow and building new snow deposits on southern slopes.
The main hazards are new and wind-drifted snow. The danger is increased especially in concave terrains and gullies, where due to snow deposits the depth of new snow is greater. In the mountains, the snow will bond poorly with the old snow base.
Conditions are demanding, due to strong wind windthrows may occur below the forest line. We advise against visiting the mountain world!
